Iron Striking relating to ‘Low Point’

The low point is the lowest part of the clubhead’s arc during the swing relative to impact; it tells you whether the club bottoms out before, at, or after the golf ball.

For most iron shots the low point should be a few inches in front of the ball so the club strikes the ball first and then the turf, producing compression and a clean divot.

Possible causes of inconsistent low point? Well, we could have improper weight shift, loss of posture, casting, poor sequencing, ball position etc.… !! So where do we start?

I’m guessing you may have worked on all of the above in one range session!

Let's keep it simple. I use a towel drill for many fixes, and you should too.

Set up as follows:

ree
  1. Place a towel 2-4 inches behind ball (ability dependent)

  2. Two tees either side of the ball wide enough for the club head.

  3. Ball marker or tee 2 inches ahead of the ball (low point)

The goal is to miss the towel, hit the ball and have the club bottom out at the forward tee.

(If you practice on mats this drill is important for feel as mats often give inaccurate feedback).

If we agree on the principle that our eyes drive the movement, just creating this task we self-organize in a way that produces the swing. Although this is not easy, all player levels can benefit from just 5-10 minutes per session doing this. We are trying to raise awareness as to what we are doing to create the required movement.

The slower we go the faster we get there so start small and work your way up!
